In 2021, at the Space Industry Association of Australia Southern Space Symposium, Enrico Palermo, Head of the Australian Space Agency, emphasised the importance of developing an industry-relevant workforce in the space sector. He stated, “We need space apprentices, we need Space Tradies.”
In response, Av-Comm Space & Defence is proud to introduce our Space Tradie program, focusing on Satellite Communications Technicians. This initiative, led by our Satellite Ground Station Technician Joshua Kassulke, aims to employ junior members who are enthusiastic about STEM, with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. These individuals will undertake an apprenticeship and receive formal Vocational Education and Training, contributing to a more inclusive and enriched space industry.
The announcement of our Space Tradie initiative coincided with the Space Industry Association of Australia’s (SIAA) Southern Space Conference 2024. During the conference, our CEO Michael Cratt addressed the audience, highlighting that workforce development has been a crucial ingredient in the success of Av-Comm’s recent projects. He also emphasised our commitment to transforming and extending the participation of diverse and minoritised groups in the space sector. “By launching our program to train Space Tradies with nationally accredited skills, Av-Comm will not only contribute to the growth of the Australian space industry workforce but also foster a thriving and innovative space community that reflects the capability and diversity of the nation.”
We believe that diversity and inclusion are key drivers of innovation and growth. A workforce enriched by a rich tapestry of cultural voices and opinions fosters a holistic approach to problem-solving and leads to multidisciplinary change. By bringing together diverse perspectives, we create an environment where creativity and collaboration thrive, leading to more comprehensive and innovative solutions in the space sector.
Skilled labor, enriched by these diverse perspectives, is essential for achieving a sustainable workforce. We are proud to undertake this initiative, which will provide recognition for the training our technicians receive and model a pathway for other new entrants into the space industry. Our apprenticeships are designed to engage culturally and linguistically diverse groups and promote gender diversity, enabling Av-Comm to develop the experience and competence required for the complex engineering involved in delivering high-performance ground segment solutions.
We are seeking applicants who share our passion for diversity and inclusion in the space industry. Join us as we work towards a more inclusive and dynamic space community for all.
Let our team of field-engineers and technicians find innovative and smart solutions to your communications challenges.
