A significant milestone has been reached with the successful installation and integration of several advanced Earth Station Antenna (ESA) systems by Av-Comm’s Technical Field Team, in collaboration with Communications & Power Industries (CPI). The project included the installation of two 9.2m Ka Band Turning Head ESAs, one 13.2m Ka/Q/V Band ESA, and four other additional Earth Station Antennas across Australia’s East and West coasts.
These systems are essential for enabling critical satellite data transmission, as well as Telemetry, Tracking, and Control (TT&C). These advanced systems are the first of their kind to be installed in Australia in a Ka/Q/V configuration, providing satellite reception above 50Ghz. Utilising Av-Comms precision alignment services, including theodolite and photogrammetry alignment, our technicians were able to achieve a reflector surfacy accuracy of ~0.1 mm ensuring the highest possible efficiency of satellite data throughput. Completed in conjunction with various pieces of test equipment, Av-Comm utilised the N9962B Keysight FieldFox spectrum analyser to enable baseline Verification and Validation (V&V) testing for frequencies above 50GHz.
The installation program spanned 18 months, requiring the simultaneous efforts of technical teams in both regions. Despite the time constraints and challenging geographical scope, the project was completed on schedule and without any major roadblocks. The synchronous Av-Comm teams were responsible for the turnkey installation, integration, and testing of the Earth Station Antennas, which are now ready for final On-The-Satellite Acceptance Testing (OSAT) upon the satellite’s launch, scheduled for early 2025.
The completion of this project marks a pivotal moment in Av-Comm’s history as Av-Comm continues to grow and expand its scope throughout both the domestic and international ground segment.
CEO Michael Cratt said, “it is a very exciting time for all of us at Av-Comm as we continue to deliver projects of increasing complexity and scope at break-neck speed. The recent commissioning of 9.2 & 13.2m CPI Antenna Gateway systems is a true testament to all the hard work and dedication of every member of the Av-Comm team”.
This incredible achievement reflects the team’s dedication to excellence and the adoption of an agile approach to ensure project success. The antennas will play a crucial role in supporting critical satellite services across the region.
